Chapter 3
Lexi’s POV
The rest of my week was painfully boring. Nothing was out of the ordinary, and I liked it when things were out of the ordinary. Everything was going well in my classes. For once since I didn’t have a lot of friends yet, I was actually getting good grades. My cell phone rang and I jumped on it, wondering if Jon was actually ever going to call me. Instead, it was just my older sister.
“Hey Sarah.” I answered, Out of all of my siblings, I was probably closest to Sarah, the second oldest.
“How are you doing in the cold? Don’t you wish you never left Florida?” Sarah answered trying to keep the bitterness out of her voice. My whole family graduated from the University of Florida and every one still lived in Florida, all less than an hour driving distance from each other. Except for me, of course.
“Sar, let’s not get into this now. So what happened?” I asked. I knew Sarah never just called to chat, there had to be a reason.
“I am beginning to think that John doesn’t want to marry. I mean, we’ve been dating for five years, and the topic hasn’t even come up!” She said and I could hear the frustration in her voice rising.
I couldn’t help but laugh; I have no idea why Sarah wants to get settled down so fast. I think it’s fun every night to go to a club and see how hot of a guy I can pick up. “Sarah, you are just twenty-five. Maybe he doesn’t want to rush things.” I tried to explain even though I knew it would go through one ear and out another. Sarah was ready to be married at twenty-two. If I ever found a man, he would have to drag me down the aisle kicking and screaming.
“But I can practically hear my organs screaming at me to have a child! By the time we get married, I’ll be the creepy old woman with the three year old!” She shrieked.
“Getting married in two years and having a kid at thirty is normal! That’s what most people do in life. And I still think that’s too damn early!” I said trying to calm her down.
“Isabella got married first, like she’s supposed to do because she’s the oldest. She got married at twenty-five and I remember thinking that’s so old. And when she just had Adam this year, at twenty-seven, I made a promise to myself to be younger! But it’s going to go out of order! It looks like Ben is going to propose to Sabrina with the way she talks!” Sarah yelled on the verge of tears.
“Oh ouch. That will cause so much more drama in our family. Samantha will feel like she has nobody with her twin getting married.” I said sighing.
“And then Meredith will want to get more serious with Steve because Mason is very serious with Melissa. You know, he’s already bought a ring?” Sarah said explaining all of my sibling’s situations.
“Why would Mason want to bring another girl in his life? I mean with six sisters he already wants to shoot himself.” My parents didn’t believe in condoms.
“And Melissa is a bitch when she gets drunk.” Sarah pointed out.
“Well, we are all a bitch when we get drunk, so we can’t hold that against her. But I mean he’s a senior in college, not necessary!” I said.
Sarah sighed. “We all have our lives planned out. Except you of course.” She said kindly. Sarah didn’t mean to be mean; she was just a very blunt person.
“I do have my life planned out, I’m going to be an equestrian vet. You know that.” I defended myself.
“Oh yeah, Mom wants me to let you know that they can ship Rain up soon. But I mean your romantic life planned out.” Sarah said. I did a happy dance. Rain, my best friend, was finally going to be able to come up to Chicago! Since I was part of the equestrian program, Northwestern let me keep my horse at the barn.
“Right now Sarah, I am perfectly happy reading romance novels and eating chocolates.” I explained.
“But don’t you want to feed the beast?” Sarah asked.
I laughed. “Trust me, I have fed the beast.”
Sarah sighed, “I have to go now, John is home. Maybe some hot sex will make him propose to me!” She said excitedly.
I winced. “Didn’t need to know that.”
“Ciao!” She yelled before hanging up. My family was just one big gossiper after another. It was a Friday afternoon so I scheduled myself with no classes. Back in Florida, I would have been laying on the roof with my girls sunbathing. Maybe even driving to the beach to pick up some hot surfer guys. Not sitting alone in the chair of my dorm room. I couldn’t jut sit around here. Hm, what to do? Maybe I could go for a run? What do you wear to go running in Chicago though? Just the thought of walking outside to the cold weather made me want to sit my butt here. I pulled out some of my nail polish. I finally decided on painting half of them green and half of them purple. Trying to paint my nails made me remember how much I suck at painting them. I had nail polish all over the corners of my toes with no nail polish remover. Normally on a sucky day like this, I would go get some ice cream and cry on Tess shoulder. But today I was forced to deal with it myself. I couldn’t live my life like this, I had to do something! Music. Music always helps with everything. I turned on my radio and started swinging my hips around. I grabbed a pair of scissors and trimmed my side bangs and the loose ends of my hair. Then, I took extra time to straighten my hair and do an amazing make over. Doing this when I was in a bad mood used to cheer me up, but then I realized that I had nowhere to go. That thought almost made me more depressed. I wiped the tear that was rolling down the cheek; I wasn’t going to sit here crying.
“What are you doing?” My roommate Tabitha asked staring at me. This time her hair was black with pink highlights and a bob cut.
“I was beginning to think you weren’t coming back this time.” I joked.
She shrugged. “I had to come back, I was running out of clean bra’s.” She said still staring at me.
“Yeah, clean bras are important.” I said laughing softly.
I won’t be here for long, “I’m going out with some friends. I should be back tomorrow morning.”
“Have fun.” I said meekly.
The pathetic tone of my voice must have carried out to her. “You could uh, come with us if you want.” Tabitha said awkwardly. My phone began buzzing again and I picked it up. Maybe John had finally proposed to Sarah. Instead it was an unknown number, Man, I hope Tess was just kidding when she said if I didn’t find a boyfriend soon, that she would write my number on the wall of a truck stop. Almost fearfully, I picked it up.
“Hello?” I said.
“Alexa?” I heard a familiar voice ask. No one called me Alexa but him.
“Jonny!’ I said excitedly.
“Jonathan.” He corrected gruffly.
I rolled my eyes. “So what has you calling?”
“Uh, remember we were discussing about going to get coffee or something? How about going out to breakfast. Tomorrow, eh?”
“Sure, eh.” I laughed teasing him.
“It’s because I’m from Canada!” Jonny defended himself laughing.
“Brrrrrrrrr.” I said. I couldn’t imagine living in the wintry depths of Canada. I can barely survive through the fall of Chicago.
“How about the Golden Nugget Pancake House?” Jonny asked.
I couldn’t help but giggle at the name of the restaurant. “Alright, but those pancakes better be golden.”
I got him to laugh again; I should be getting a gold medal for this.
“I can pick you up at 7:30.” Jon declared.
Of course, the guy I like is causing me to get up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning. He doesn’t need to know that I wouldn’t do this for any one else. “Yeah, sure.”
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow morning.” Jonathan said before hanging up. I sat there baffled; apparently Jonny didn’t like talking on the phone much. Meanwhile, I could talk all night long if some one gave me the opportunity. Tabitha looked at me confused, probably because I was sitting there smiling like an idiot. I don’t think Tabitha gets the point of smiling. “I can’t go out with you tonight.” I said trying to keep my smile from growing; I didn’t want to seem like a jerk.
Tabitha shrugged. “Alright. That sucks.” She said before walking out of the room. I checked my phone, even though it’s nine o’clock, I should go to bed! The only way I can get up at 6:30 is if I get lots of sleep, lots and lots and lots of sleep! I jumped out of my chair and towards my bed. I fell over some particle and lunged forward, falling on my face. I groaned and rubbed my head, maybe I really should clean my room like Jonny said.
I woke up the next morning to my alarm clock blaring. I expected it to be 6:30, but instead it was 7:15! Crap! I leaped out of bed and onto the floor, searching for something clean to wear. Finally, a settled on a skirt from Hollister ( http://www.hollisterco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10251&catalogId=10201&productId=590691&langId=-1&categoryId=12595&parentCategoryId=12552&colorSequence=02 ). Then I remembered how Jonathan had thought I was crazy for wearing “summer” clothing in the fall, so I put on a pair of black leggings underneath. In Florida, that skirt would have been fine I thought grudgingly. I paired that with a matching red tank top (http://www.hollisterco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10251_10201_567625_-1_12607_12552 ) and ruined the whole look with sneakers. What can I say, Hollister is big in Florida. Plus, I couldn’t afford a “winter wardrobe.” I put on a white sweatshirt and looked at my hair, it was wavy and still the red mess. I groaned, there was no time to straighten it, I was stuck with this. Of course, then he knocked on the door. Ten minutes early. No time for make up. At 7:20 in the morning. I threw open the door breathlessly. Jonathan was wearing a pair of jeans and a simple, red Chicago Blackhawk’s sweatshirt.
“Hey, we’re matching.” I said breathlessly referring that we were both wearing red.
His smile turned into a frown. “Did you forget?” He asked.
“Of course not!” I gasped. Great, now he thinks I don’t care. “I just don’t get up well early. I’m more of a night person.”
Jonathan shrugged, “I’m more of a morning person.” I couldn’t help but giggle, another difference. Jon stared at me for a little before finally smiling a little. “You like nice without make-up running down your face.”
I grinned broadly. “Why thank you.”
